About

York Piano Workshop

The shop opened in Lawrence Street in April 2024 after relocating from Buttercrambe (known then as “Galtres Pianos”).

Our aim is to play our own part in the circular economy; maintaining, repairing and reconditioning pianos wherever we can. Pianos do have a limited lifespan but can often be restored or reconditioned and given a new lease of life. In the rarer cases where restoration just isn’t viable, individual parts can be repurposed or recycled.

The most rewarding projects tend to be those involving very tired or neglected pianos that can be rescued and rejuvenated. To see these pianos adopted by new owners, to be played and appreciated for years to come, brings so much satisfaction.

At the shop you can find a collection of secondhand and reconditioned pianos suitable for anyone, from beginners to experienced musicians.

Our current stock can be seen here:

Mobile services include piano tuning, repairs and servicing. If your piano action needs reconditioning work, it can be brought into the workshop and returned to you upon completion.

Mike Derrett – Owner / Piano Technician

I started in the piano trade with a three year course in piano technology at the Newark College Piano School in Nottinghamshire.

After qualifying, I began working as a piano technician alongside doing a degree in music production in my home city of York.

In 2016 I joined piano manufacturer Cavendish, based in Bolton Abbey, as head technician.

Around five years later I moved back to working in and around York; setting up a workshop as Galtres Pianos in Buttercrambe, building, restoring and servicing pianos.

In April 2024, the business found a new home as York Piano Workshop at 65A Lawrence Street, York.
